On Thursday, January 11th, the Varsity Girls soccer team traveled to Porterville for their second league game to start the season.

The Redwood Ranger soccer girls had an eventful game, finishing with a 3-0 victory over the Panthers. After their previous 1-1 tie against El Diamante, the Rangers are definitely in it to win when it comes to the undefeated title for EYL.
Jayme Gomez, ’25, a third-year varsity member reflects on how she and her teammates performed during the match. She says,” I feel like we played pretty well we had some great moments playing quickly to get out of pressure. We had a lot of scoring opportunities.”

Gomez’s favorite memory of the game was when the first goal was scored. She says, “It was within the first 5 minutes of the game. It was a free kick from Paityn Bruce and Avery Yagle scored off the rebound. It’s always nice to get an early lead in a game.”
Gomez concludes the recap of the game with a challenge that the team had faced. She says, “One challenge during this game was definitely the field conditions. It was very muddy and made it hard to stay balanced on your feet.”
Kwyn Bruce, ’24, a first-year varsity member reflects on her performance throughout the game as well as the highlights. She says, “Personally I felt like I did good. The team moved the ball really well and we played around them well.”

Bruce mentioned some challenges the team faced despite the win. She says,” They had a height advantage over us, so we had to work on getting first to the ball. As a whole we did good, we moved the ball around good.”
Since starting the season Bruce says,” We started kind of slow but now we are working together and getting to know each other better and how we play. We are all just starting to communicate more.”
Roxanna Bahr, ’23, a third-year varsity member for the Redwood Rangers focuses on the quality of team play throughout the game. She says,” I feel the team played very well and connected. We acted as a whole rather than as individual players.”
Bahr hones in on the start of league play when she says, “We haven’t been playing our best in league so but I’m sure this is just the beginning. We’re better under pressure against teams that challenge us and we just need to figure out how to adapt to less intense games.”
She mentions how the conditions of the field affected the game as a whole. She says, “Honestly the game wasn’t my best, but the team played very well considering the field wasn’t the best. Like I said before, the field conditions were pretty bad and we just had to learn to adjust to the team.”
The Ranger girls have many more games to come and are excited to showcase their abilities despite any condition they may face. Be sure to support the women’s soccer team as they play away against Monache High School on Wednesday, January 17th.
